Definition

Vaginal thrush is very common, affecting around 3 in 4 women at some point. It’s caused by an overgrowth of a natural fungus called Candida albicans. This usually happens when the balance of bacteria and acidity in the vagina is disrupted.

While thrush is usually harmless, it can be uncomfortable. The good news is it’s easy to treat.

Symptoms

  1. Itching and irritation around the vagina
  2. Redness and soreness
  3. White, thick discharge (sometimes described as “cottage cheese-like”)
  4. Pain or burning during sex or when passing urine
  5. Swelling or mild inflammation

Not everyone gets all these symptoms – for some, thrush may be picked up only during a routine check.

Causes

  1. Pregnancy
  2. Antibiotics
  3. Diabetes
  4. Weakened immunity (e.g. chemotherapy, HIV)
  5. Tight or synthetic underwear
  6. Perfumed soaps, bubble baths, or vaginal douching

Treatment

Thrush is easily treated with antifungal tablets, creams, or pessaries. 

These are available over the counter or by prescription.

  2. Pessaries – inserted into the vagina, target infection directly

  2. Use gentle, fragrance-free toiletries
  3. Wipe front to back after using the toilet
  4. Avoid harsh cleaning products or antiseptics in the vaginal area
