Emergency contraception

Emergency contraception helps prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure (like a condom breaking). It works best when taken as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours.

Topics

What is emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception is a treatment you can use after unprotected sex or if your usual contraception has failed, to reduce the risk of pregnancy. It is not meant to be used as a regular form of contraception.

Types of emergency contraception

  1. Levonorgestrel pills(e.g. Levonelle, LoviOne)– effective if taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex.
  2. Ulipristal acetate pills(EllaOne)– effective if taken within 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex.
  3. Copper IUD – can be fitted up to 5 days after unprotected sex and is the most effective option (available from sexual health clinics).

How it works
Emergency contraception mainly works by delaying ovulation (the release of an egg) so that sperm cannot fertilise it. It does not terminate an existing pregnancy.

When to take it
The sooner emergency contraception is taken after unprotected sex, the more effective it is.

Possible side effects

  1. Nausea
  2. Headache
  3. Changes in your next period
  4. Mild abdominal pain

When to seek advice
Seek medical advice if you vomit within 2 hours of taking a pill, have severe abdominal pain, or suspect you might already be pregnant.
