Acid Reflux / Heartburn

Acid reflux, commonly known as heartburn, occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest or throat. It is often triggered by certain foods, lifestyle factors, or medical conditions. While occasional heartburn is common, frequent or severe symptoms may indicate gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and require medical attention. Effective management includes lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and medications to reduce acid production and protect the esophagus.

Topics

What is acid reflux (heartburn)?

Acid reflux happens when stomach acid leaks back into the oesophagus. This irritates the lining of the oesophagus and causes a burning feeling in the chest, often after eating or when lying down. If symptoms happen regularly, it may be a sign of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

What causes acid reflux?

  1. Acid reflux can be triggered by several factors, including:
  2. Eating large or fatty meals
  3. Spicy or acidic foods
  4. Alcohol and caffeine
  5. Smoking
  6. Obesity or pregnancy
  7. Certain medicines
  8. Stress and lying down soon after eating

How does acid reflux happen?

Normally, a ring of muscle at the bottom of the oesophagus (the lower oesophageal sphincter) closes after food enters the stomach. If this muscle becomes weak or relaxes at the wrong time, stomach acid can travel back up into the oesophagus, leading to heartburn and irritation.

Common symptoms of acid reflux

◦ Burning sensation in the chest (heartburn)
◦ Sour or bitter taste in the mouth
◦ Regurgitation of food or acid
◦ Chest discomfort after meals
◦ Cough or throat irritation
◦ Difficulty swallowing (in some cases)

How is acid reflux diagnosed?

Acid reflux is often diagnosed based on your symptoms. Your doctor may ask about when your symptoms happen and what triggers them. If symptoms are severe, long-lasting or associated with weight loss or swallowing problems, further tests may be recommended.

What treatments are available?

For many people, medicines are very effective at controlling symptoms. These may include:
◦ Antacids for quick symptom relief
◦ H2 blockers to reduce acid production
◦ Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid more strongly
These treatments help heal irritation and reduce heartburn.

Lifestyle and self-care options

Lifestyle changes can play a big role in improving acid reflux, including:
◦ Eating smaller meals
◦ Avoiding trigger foods
◦ Not lying down for 2–3 hours after eating
◦ Losing weight if overweight
◦ Raising the head of the bed
◦ Reducing alcohol and stopping smoking

Side Effects

Acid reflux medicines are generally well tolerated. Some people may experience mild side effects such as headache, stomach upset or dizziness. If one treatment doesn’t suit you, there are usually alternatives available.

Why treat

Treating acid reflux can greatly improve comfort, sleep and quality of life. It can also help prevent complications such as inflammation of the oesophagus, ulcers or long-term damage if symptoms are frequent or severe.
