Cystitis (Urinary Tract Infection) in Women

Cystitis is a common lower urinary tract infection (UTI) that mostly affects women. By age 24, around 1 in 3 women will have experienced it, and 20–30% may have repeated infections.

Can men get cystitis?
It’s rare in men and may indicate a more serious problem. Men should always see a doctor if they have UTI symptoms.

Causes

  1. Bacterial infection (often after sex, wiping back to front, or using catheters)
  2. Chemical irritation from soaps or hygiene products
  3. Radiation or certain medications
  4. Underlying health issues like kidney stones
  5. Chronic interstitial cystitis

Risk Factors

  1. You’re more likely to get cystitis if you:
  2. Are female (shorter urethra makes infection easier)
  3. Are sexually active
  4. Are pregnant
  5. Have menopause, diabetes, or a weakened immune system
  6. Are elderly or have had a hysterectomy

Symptoms

  1. Burning sensation when peeing
  2. Frequent urge to urinate
  3. Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  4. Lower stomach or pelvic pain

When to see a doctor

Seek medical advice if:

  1. Symptoms last more than 3 days
  2. Symptoms don’t improve with antibiotics
  3. You’re pregnant, a man, or get infections often
  4. You experience high fever, back pain, vomiting, blood in urine, or cannot urinate

Treatments

Mild UTIs can sometimes clear on their own, but treatment helps relieve symptoms and prevent complications.

  1. Self-care: Drink plenty of water, avoid sex, use a hot water bottle, and take pain relief. Sodium or potassium citrate can reduce burning.
  2. Antibiotics: Nitrofurantoin (first choice) or Trimethoprim (second choice, if sensitive) help clear bacterial cystitis. Pregnant women should consult a doctor first.
  3. Recurring infections: Low-dose daily antibiotics or a single dose after sex may be prescribed. Postmenopausal women may benefit from vaginal oestrogen cream.

Prevention

  1. Wipe front to back
  2. Pee after sex and avoid holding urine in
  3. Stay hydrated and empty your bladder fully
  4. Shower instead of bathing and keep the genital area clean and dry
  5. Avoid scented soaps, bubble baths, spermicides, sugary or caffeinated drinks
