Mini Pills

The mini pill, also known as the progestogen-only pill (POP), is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken correctly. It contains only the hormone progesterone, making it ideal for women who cannot take oestrogen. It’s commonly used by women over 35, those who smoke, breastfeed, or have high blood pressure. You can order it online by completing a quick consultation, which is reviewed by our in-house doctors to ensure it's suitable for you. There's no need for a face-to-face appointment.

Topics

How it works

  1. Thickens cervical mucus, blocking sperm from reaching the egg
  2. Thins the womb lining, preventing fertilised eggs from implanting
  3. Some types (Cerazette and Cerelle) may also stop ovulation
  4. If you start on the first day of your period, you’re protected straight away
  5. If you start on another day, you’ll need extra protection (such as condoms) for 7 days

Benefits

  1. Suitable for women who are breastfeeding, over 35, smoke, are overweight or have high blood pressure
  2. Can make periods lighter, shorter and less painful
  3. May reduce PMS symptoms like bloating, mood swings and nausea
  4. Oestrogen-free — ideal if you’re sensitive to oestrogen
  5. Taken daily without a break, making it easy to follow

How to take

  1. Take one pill at the same time every day, without a break between packs
  2. Choose a time that fits your routine, like first thing in the morning or before bed
  3. Twelve-hour pills (e.g. Cerazette, Cerelle): must be taken within 12 hours of your usual time

Missed Pills

  1. If you miss your pill or take it late, follow the instructions for your pill type and use condoms for the next 2 days if needed
  2. If you vomit or have severe diarrhoea within 3 hours of taking it, it may not work — follow the missed pill guidance

Side effects

The mini pill is usually well tolerated. Some women may notice irregular periods, headaches, or cramps at first, but these often settle within 3 months. Speak to your doctor if symptoms are severe or persistent.

Who shouldn’t take it

The mini pill may not be suitable if you have unexplained bleeding, liver problems, severe artery disease, a history of breast cancer, or ovarian cysts. Always share your medical history during your consultation.
