Sildenafil is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping achieve and maintain an erection. It works by relaxing blood vessels and is usually taken about 30–60 minutes before sexual activity. Always use under medical supervision.
Sildenafil belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It works by:
Relaxing the blood vessels in the penis.
Increasing blood flow during sexual arousal.
Helping achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.
It does not increase sexual desire on its own; sexual stimulation is still required.
Do not take Sildenafil if you are on nitrate medications (for chest pain/angina), as this combination can cause dangerous drops in blood pressure.
Avoid combining with recreational drugs known as “poppers” (amyl nitrite).
Inform your doctor if you have:
Heart or blood vessel problems
Low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure
Severe liver or kidney disease
History of stroke or heart attack
Alcohol may reduce the effectiveness and increase side effects.
Common side effects (usually mild and temporary):
Headache
Flushing
Indigestion
Blocked or runny nose
Dizziness
Visual changes (blurred vision, blue-tinged vision)
Serious but rare side effects:
Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes
Sudden hearing loss or ringing in the ears
Priapism (erection lasting more than 4 hours – requires emergency care)
